Coral Reef Model UN Team: Best Delegation at Global Classrooms 2012

February 18, 2012—Miami, Florida - Coral Reef Senior High School’s Model United Nations (MUN) team was awarded Best High School Delegation at Global Classrooms Miami 2012 held at Miami Dade College North Campus. Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the issues and procedures of the United Nations. Students are assigned a country and committee with a topic that would be discussed in the UN and are ultimately tasked with writing a resolution to the problem.

The Global Classrooms conference is hosted by the UNA-USA in 24 cities around the world with the purpose of “engaging students in subject areas like history, geography, social studies, international relations, government, and even science.” Participation in Model UN Conferences, such as Global Classrooms, teaches students important skills such as debate, research, writing, reading comprehension, public speaking, and negotiation.

There were 31 Coral Reef students that attended the conference with their sponsor, Ms. Marcia Ferguson, and three chaperones, Mrs. Patricia Andrian, Mrs. Arelne Carmenate, and Mr. Charles Mahoney. Lucia Baca, Juan Castano, Rachel Cohn, and Juliana Bighman were awarded Best Delegate; Brianna Arajuo, Thomas Caselli, Jaime Castano, Nicholas Grossi, Ridhima Gurnani, Nicole Martinez, Leila Zakaria, and Jialin Zhang were awarded Honorable Mentions; and Ridhima Gurnani and Nicole Martinez were awarded Best Position Papers. Congratulations to all participants!

February 21, 2012 – Atlanta, Georgia – Congratulations to Coral Reef Senior High School International Baccalaureate senior, Ridhima Gurnani as she has been selected as one of the 250 Finalists in the 2011-2012 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. Initally 84,000 applicants and more than 2,200 Semifinalists participated in this program for outstanding leaders in school and the community. Ridhima will now attend the Scholars Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, in April. All Finalists who attend the Scholars Weekend are assured of receiving an award ($10,000 for Regional Scholars or $20,000 for National Scholars) that will be applicable to the college of university of their choice. All travel arrangements are made by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

2012 Recipient of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing

February 9, 2012 – Miami, Florida – Congratulations to Coral Reef Senior High School’s Dayna Wilson, a junior in the Agriscience & Engineering Technology Academy. Dayna is the 2012 Recipient of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing, South Florida Affiliate.

As part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology, the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) seeks to recognize high school women with outstanding achievements and aspirations in computing and technology through the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.

IT Women will honor her award on March 8th, 2012 at the DCOTA Center, 1855 Griffin Road, Dania, Florida.

Coral Reef Senior High Dance Team – Varsity and Junior Varsity Cudettes

February 4-5, 2012 - Orlando, Florida - Coral Reef Senior High Dance Team – Varsity and Junior Varsity Cudettes as they competed in the Universal Dance Association National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Florida Wide World of Sports, televised on ESPN. Congratulations to the following winning groups:Junior Varsity – 1^st place Jazz (OUT OF 13 TEAMS)

Junior Varsity – 1^st Place Hip-Hop (OUT OF 12 TEAMS)

Varsity – 1^st Place Large Varsity jazz (OUT OF 45 TEAMS)

Varsity – 4^th Place Large Varsity Hip-Hop (1^ST IN MY HEART) – (OUT OF 55 TEAMS)

The Cudettes are under the direction of Ms. Rebecca Santalo. The Cudettes also attended four competitions this year, receiving top placements in all categories of each competition. In addition they also performed in other events such as Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent’s Hispanic Showcase, Coral Reef’s Mr. Barracuda (show) and Aids Benefit at Gulliver.

MIAMI, February 9, 2012 - Eight Coral Reef Senior High School students were among National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s Finalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships. These outstanding students are: are: Katherine Bennett, Bryan Blaise, Nicolas Gutierrez, Adam Kendrix, Alaric Lurie, Nicholas Mendez, Melissa Quintana, and Ivan Rasmussen. All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2012, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

2012 Scholastics Art Award

February 2, 2012 – Miami, Florida – The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are run by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. a not-for-profit organization that supports young artists and writers. Each year, the Awards provide the opportunity for more than 250,000 teenagers in grades 7-12 to earn regional and national honors. Graduating high school seniors who submit portfolios of their work have the opportunity to compete for more than $1.5 million in scholarships from colleges and universities across the country.

This year, the Miami-Dade Awards received over 500 student submissions. Following an extensive blind-judging process, 35 student works were identified to receive the highest honor at the Regional level, the Gold Key Award. This elite group represents just 6% of the students who participated this year! From the 35 Gold Key Awards, five submissions were further selected as our Region’s American Voices Nominees, a “best in show recognition.” The exemplary work submitted by these students is now being adjudicated at the national level by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The Scholastics Art Awards are the largest and longest running assessment and recognition programs for the visual arts in the United States. Of more than 2,000 student artworks submitted by teachers, approximately 250 are selected by a jury for the Scholastics Art Awards regional exhibition at the Miami Art Museum. Every year, local award winners compete on the national level in New York City. Students from Miami-Dade County schools consistently rank among the top winners at the national level and have set records for the number of awards won by the students of a single school district. In 2011, students from Miami-Dade County won 17 national awards nearly doubling the previous year’s results.

Coral Reef’s Boys Varsity Soccer Team

Congratulations to Coral Reef’s Boys Varsity Soccer Team and their Coach Mike Adeyemi. The team finished the season as the District 16 – 5A Runner Up . They advanced to the Regional Quarter Finals and played a heartbreaker against Coral Gables, They lost in 2^nd overtime (penalty kicks).

PTSA Reflections Program

January 26, 2012 – Miami, Florida - Designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education, the Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts. The 2011 – 2012 Reflections Program Theme was: “Diversity means…” PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. http://www.parenting.com/The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition and created and submitted works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage). For nearly 40 years, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art. The Reflections Program was started in 1969 by then Colorado PTA President Mary Lou Anderson.

Students interested in partaking in this opportunity are encouraged to read the informational flyer provided by the Region.
